During the construction of the BOO installation, large-scale abuse was made of foreign workers from Bangladesh, Indonesia and India. The legal background to this case is the avoidance of labor and social laws. Mr. Bijkerk represented more than 300 foreign workers who eventually received millions in compensation in total.
The DOK case in which Mr. Bijkerk has also successfully represented more than 300 Colombian workers and more than 300 local workers in a major labor dispute. The employees eventually received adequate financial compensation.
Another area of expertise is eGaming law. Curacao has one of the largest offshore online gaming networks in the world. Mr. Bijkerk represents, among others, the Victims of Online Gambling Curacao Foundation, (Stichting Belangenbehartiging Gedupeerden Online Kansspelen) which represents the interests of victims of online gambling. Mr. Bijkerk currently assists more than 100 clients who have become victims of fraud, scams, abuse of gambling addiction or otherwise having a claim on an online casino, in which he collaborates with international gaming specialists if necessary. In August 2019, Mr. Bijkerk was interviewed in a BBC report on online gambling malpractice. A number of online gaming disputes have been successful settled, others are still ongoing in court.
